This post is an author/illustrator spotlight for Karen Obuhanych, a Hawaii local. This Little Kitty was definitely one of my favorites this year! Favorite enough to buy the book AND illustration prints from Obuhanych’s Etsy shop!
Obuhanych’s art is definitely adorably captivating. Her cats bring a lot of humor to the story with their personalities and expressions not only evident in their telling eyes but their scraggly furs & body language.
My purchased print featuring her upcoming 2024 title
This Little Kitty in the Garden
This Little Kitty is a play on the nursery rhyme This Little Piggy. While the rhyme may seem a bit predictable, there is enough twists and humor (especially in the illustrations) to make this one an instant repeat read (especially with toddlers). You can get a comical taste from the following lines:
“After making a mess
and eating just the middle,
this little kitty is full of breakfast kibble.”
Though I do love a cozy bedtime story, This Little Kitty carries a lot of energy & laughs, which is refreshing after a long day. With its brief text, and ojos-de-plato (plate sized cat eyes), this title is bound to be loved from baby to grandparents!
My other lovely print!
Translation difficulty: This Little Kitty perderá la rima en la traducción pero sera facil de traducir si se toma un poco de tiempo. Los 5 terminos mas dificiles se los dejo abajito.
- grumble = gruñir
- coil = enroscar
- pounce = saltar o abalanzar
- rearrange = reorganizar
Obuhanych has illustrated a few titles. We checked out a couple available at our local library & definitely encourage you to do the same!

This is her upcoming January 2024 title. It definitely looks like a stroll for the eyes!
Author & illustrator definitely work together to bring the humorous juxtaposition of what Annie claims her apathetic cat Delilah feels. Will Delilah catch a hint & come to the rescue of her master?

Any marathon runners out there? Barbara Hendricks is the tortoise protagonist in Calvert’s take of a Tortoise & the Hare prequel. I especially love that all her race opponents are slow moving animals! She doubts her abilities, but Lorraine, her girl, helps train her & gives Barbara perspective about what racing is all about: the journey.
I am looking forward to reading this title & appreciating Kto’s depiction of dogs, as her cats are so adorable!
